HISTORY

Goethe has left us many winged words, as well as the talk of the “thread running through history”. In his novel “The Elective Affinities” of 1809 he writes: “We hear of a special institution in the English navy.

All the ropes of the royal fleet, from the strongest to the weakest, are spun in such a way that a red thread passes through the whole, which one can not wriggle out without dissolving everything, and in which even the smallest pieces are indicated that they belong to the crown. “

Your bachelor thesis must also have a common thread. Like a story, it must enable the reader to orient himself from start to finish on the red thread of your scientific work. Therefore, when writing your bachelor thesis, do not just look for logical reasoning. Even consistent spellings and consistent use of different formatting are the leitmotif of a bachelor thesis. So, for example, avoid switching from the “Bachelor thesis” to the “Bachelor thesis” or “Bachelor thesis”!

Other positions

Already Goethe used the image of the “red thread” as an excuse for the many different entries in Ottilien’s journal, through which, nevertheless, sympathy and inclination draw as a common thread. As in life, there are also different positions in science on one and the same topic. Above all, scientific work requires fairness. Therefore, you are expected not only to present the positions that fit your opinion, but also to highlight other important, perhaps conflicting, aspects of your topic.

Nevertheless, you already have a position on the subject, and so you compare and evaluate the opinions of others, of course, from your point of view. This is not only allowed but is explicitly expected of you when writing a bachelor thesis.

The presentation and evaluation of the individual positions under one aspect that you have selected is the aim of your bachelor thesis. If you then manage to solve one of the unanswered questions, you certainly have your bachelor’s degree in your pocket. But be careful, do not pretend too much. Getting the right questions is a lot harder than you might think.

The right shape

Many universities and departments have published their own layout rules for the bachelor thesis. Before you start writing, ask your professor or supervisor what the form of your bachelor thesis should look like. This applies not only to margin, line spacing and font size, but also to the citation method.

If all of these attempts do not lead you to unambiguous answers, general rules will help (see, for example, the link to citation guidelines in the text Diploma Thesis). If you look for citation rules in the literature, you will probably get eight different suggestions for ten books. Therefore, the rule of thumb is: If you do not have any information from your university, choose a form that suits you and keep it consistent throughout your bachelor thesis.

Writing also means revising

There are very different styles of writing. Perhaps you are among the students who think for a long time and then immediately put a ready-to-publish version of their bachelor thesis on paper. This is quite rare and should not be your claim. Most authors first write down a few thoughts or structure the subject for themselves. Then you formulate a raw version, which you revise in several steps up to the final version.

Do not overstrain yourself by expecting to write a great text on the first chapter of the stand. That rather inhibits creativity. Bring them something on paper and then they can file on the interim result.

You can also ask friends to read their text and get suggestions. Your environment is not familiar with the topic? OK, but maybe there is someone here who is good at typing or can go through the logic of their reasoning. Neither? Then you can still rely on one of our professional science lecturers. Whatever they want to do.

Just think about who they want to include in their project bachelor thesis, who might be able to support them? Formatting, printing, proofreading, cooking food, relieving stress support (…) there are plenty of starting points.
